The password unlocker for Western Digital hard disks unlocks automatically supported 2.5"|3.5" hard disks from Western Digital that are protected with an ATA password (without data loss).

Unlocker for Western Digital 2.5"|3.5" hard drives

If technically possible, the USER|MASTER password is output, so the hard drive could be locked again with the same password.
Or perhaps conclusions can be drawn about other areas (social media) where the same password is used.

Master-Password:

The hard disk manufacturer (or the USER itself) can, for example, assign a master password. (but this does not yet activate the access protection), the assigned User password can be forgotten, the master password can be used to change the hard disk can be unlocked.

Security level -> User password

At security level -> High -> The hard disk can be unlocked with the user password or master password.

At security level -> Maximum -> The hard disk can only be unlocked with the user password.

Note:

Many manufacturers set a master password ex works.

Our software (only Unlocker for Toshiba HDD) tries to unlock the hard disk with known master passwords (WD, Seagate, Maxtor, Samsung and IBM).

ATA-Security -> ATA-Password

Every hard disk (also SSD) can be locked nowadays by a password. This password is stored in the service area of the hard disk and can be used there can't be easily removed or changed.

An ATA password can have a maximum of 32 digits.

There is a Master / User password with 2 security levels -> High and Maximum. These passwords are stored in the service area (firmware) of the hard disk.

User password:

1. high (High Security) -> The hard disk can be unlocked with the user password or master password..

2. maximum (Maximum Security) -> The hard disk can only be unlocked with the user password.

If the user password has been forgotten and a master password has been set up beforehand, this can be used to the hard disk must be unlocked.

Note:

If a password is active each read/write access is returned as error (read error - CRC). If you don't have a hard disk tool that can show the presence of a password, you often think his hard drive is broken.

The HPA and DCO area

-> HPA - Host Protected Area

If the capacity of the hard disk has been reduced (e.g. a 1 TB hard disk to 800 GB) the sectors are hidden behind the 800 GB (up to the full size of the hard disk) or invisible.

This can no longer be accessed. The hard disk is only displayed with 800 GB (Windows does not notice anything), only the model name indicates a 1 TB hard disk.

This HPA area is hidden from file and operating systems and thus also from formatting and partitioning programs and is no longer accessible to them.

-> DCO - Device Configuration Overlay

ist - as well as the HPA area - a hidden Section that has been present on hard disks for some time.

The Device Configuration Overlay (DCO) can be used to change values that are stored in the Identify information of a hard disk. The BIOS, operating system, or user cannot normally rely on information in the DCO area.

DCO can do much more than HPA By changing the feature bits in the DCO area, the manufacturer can completely manipulate or configure the hard disk. This means that many capabilities and properties of the hard disk, such as:

• Presence of the ATA security
• Prence of HPA
• real size of the hard disk outward (sectors size - LBA)
• Transmission speed (DMA modes)
• SMART
and more...

can be switched on or off, or a certain sector value can be set. This sector value is then used as the basis for HPA.

HPA and DCO can exist simultaneously.

Some tools can indicate the presence of HPA/DCO. This is especially important in forensics, as data and information can be hidden in the HPA or DCO areas.

MPRC -> master password revision code

Most hard drives support a so-called"Master Password Revision Code". This shows if the factory password has been changed. in the hard disk details you can see the current value. If there is 0xFFFE, the master password has not been changed yet.

This value can be re-allocated with various of our products, and is also used e.g. on notebooks for labelling and assignment of the assigned master password can be used.
